Phoenix Suns, Thunderbrids & AVNET provide "summer fruit" for Melonhead

Abundant Summer for The Melonhead Foundation

Our thanks and gratitude go out this summer to local Arizona organizations that have benifited The Melonhead Foundation Patient Assitance Program. These funds are used to provide financial support to our Melonhead families for basic needs, medical expenses not covered by insurance and natural healing.

The Phoenix Suns awarded a program grant in the amount of $10,000.

The Phoenix Thunderbirds awarded a program grant of $10,000.

AVNET awarded a program grant of $2,500.

Festival of Lights donated $2000 from funds raised at the Annual Wine Tasting.

The Melonhead Foundation as always is appreciative of the continued support of these local organization for supporting our Arizona families experiencing pediatric cancer. Together we are making a positive difference for families in our community in need of support. We continue to set an example at the leading edge of charitable giving providing a service that is so grossly neglected.

Melonhead Foundation Annual Report

The Melonhead Foundation

Annual Report 2009

The Melonhead Foundation posted another successful year in 2009. Most remarkably for today’s economy, for the second year in a row our revenue increased and our Cost of Goods decreased. This accomplishment is attributed to our grass root organization and implementation. The foundation is supported by a volunteer board of trustees and a volunteer run charity. The Melonhead Foundation has only one paid staff member as a fund raising consultant.

Patient Aid Assistance Program

The primary purpose of The Foundation is the financial support of children 21 years of age or younger with any diagnosis of cancer. In 2009 the awards to families seeking helped were $27,444 plus an additional $720 in gift cards issued through our Christmas  Wish Tree program. Making our total revenue awarded $28,164. While this is a successful contribution, for the second year we are working with a waiting list of families. More professionals in social services are now aware of The Melonhead Foundation’s unique program and the charity is inundated with families in need weekly. The growing number of families on our waiting list validates the need for our unique service. The Melonhead Foundation is dedicated to the continuation of raising more funds through our own events, securing more grant funding from other corporations and increasing public awareness of the need in our community for pediatric cancer patients and their families.

Revenue Success

Fund raising income, donations and grants all showed an increase in 2009. Our revenue was up 13.9% over the 2008 fiscal year. Remaining true to our grass roots philosophy is the main reason for this success. Our fundraising efforts continue to be successful due to the support received from volunteers each year. Our volunteer grant writing trustees seeking and receive new funding each year.

Cost of Goods Sold

Again, remaining true to our grass roots was the sole reason that our Cost of Goods for our special events was decreased in 2009 by 9.3%.

Public Awareness

Each year as The Melonhead Foundation grows and continues its work in the community, our public awareness also increases. As more people learn of our work and the need in the community, our charity’s success increases. The exposure and growth in the community is priceless. In 2009, The Foundation added two new events to our fundraising calendar bringing us into new sectors of the community. Our United Way contributions as well as our S.E.C.C. contributions increased. Our greatest single success in 2009 was the partnership with the Phoenix Coyotes. In addition to grant funding the Coyotes supported The Melonhead Foundation with a charity night in October and the Coyotes Wives implemented our Christmas Wish Tree grogram within their organization in December. The Chandler Chamber of Commerce produced new awareness as The Foundation began a second year with this organization. As a result the charity was chosen as the beneficiary of Party in the Park held in October by Terra Solis Realty.

 Camp Wannahealyah & Wellness Center

The original inspiration for The Melonhead Foundation is the healing home and wellness center project that has been “in the wings” for many years. In 2009 with continued dedication toward seeing this wellness center become a realty, lease negotiations began for a Tempe property. The model of the Wannahealyah Wellness Center is a self-sustaining entity which will teach and implement natural healing practices as a compliment to western protocols for pediatric cancer patients and their families free of charge. The Melonhead Foundation is only $40,000 away from achieving this goal and establishing the first phase of project Camp Wannahealyah.

Thanks to each of you for assisting The Melonhead Foundation in another banner year supporting the needs of children with cancer and their families in our community. We are making a positive difference in the lives of our families on a very personal level addressing a need most other cancer charities do not recognize

A UNIQUE PEDIATRIC CANCER CHARITY

So you aren’t familiar with The Melonhead Foundation.  Well, we aren’t surprised.  We are a grass-roots organization, that for over 12 years have stayed true to being the “little organization” with a big heart.

Since the birth of our foundation, founder, Deb Leone, as a single mom, went through the process and experience of having a child with cancer.  She identified through her experience that the larger organizations one turns to for assistance really weren’t providing assistance to support any day-to-day living challenges that affected the entire family.  The Leone family also found that the western “traditional” treatments were not enough to facilitate Melanie’s healing.  As a legacy to Melanie and the process that the family encountered, the Melonhead Foundation became a vehicle to facilitate for others who have a need.

Since the beginning, the organization embraced a 3 fold purpose:
     1.  To provide financial aid to families of children 21 years of age or younger, with any diagnosis of cancer.

2,To provide a resource center for all patients experiencing cancer and searching for alternative practices.

3.The ultimate goal of The Foundation is to establish the first permanent Camp Wannahealyah (www.campwannahealyah.orgin Arizona.

Even the large – and well-recognized organizations like St Judes and The American Cancer Society, refer families to our foundation for assistance.

The Melonhead Foundation is a unique organization where 80% of the dollars you donate through our patient aid program go directly to patient aid.  The majority of other organizations (who receive large amounts of funding from various sources) generally take as much as 60% of the dollars for overhead, and another large sum for research hence not leaving much or anything for the family.

Less than 3% of cancer charities in the US that facilitate directly to client families, we are also one of the few to have low overhead, a phenomenal group of dedicated volunteers, and a waiting list of families who have a need.

When people desire to make a difference there is more consideration as to where those dollars are being spent and the purpose in which they are being utilized. As an organization, we are able to share with you EXACTLY how your dollars made a difference in the lives of a family who are dealing with a child with cancer. Your donation makes a direct and immediate difference.

This year, the Melonhead Foundation is seeking to expand our direct impact and is looking for $40,000 seed money to implement another facet of the foundation – the WannaHealYah Wellness Center.  As society is ready to embrace more of the “alternative” practices to wellness –(like Acupuncture,  IV Therapies, naturopathy, homeopathy, kinesiology, lymphatic drainage massage, Emotional Trauma release therapies)  as a compliment to western medicine protocols, we feel the time is here for us to have a physical location to provide options and alternative treatments to the entire family – at little or no charge to the patient family. We are confident that the funding and personnel will appear to complete this type of endeavor, and we can continue to have a positive impact on the families who are experiencing this challenging process, as well as, others who are seeking effective alternative practices, through our wellness center.

We are grateful for those who have, and continue to embrace the purpose of The Melonhead Foundation – Melanie would be proud to know of the difference she makes even though she is no longer on the planet to appreciate the recognition.

We believe that everyone can make a difference, and we value contributions of various kinds and of various levels.  We are grateful to everyone who is involved and in support of our mission, because we continue to believe that together we can make a difference as we continue to move forward one step at a time.

Thanks to Scotty Upshall and the Coyotes!

A big, special thank you to Scottie Upshall of the Coyotes hockey team for sponsoring a wish tree with the Coyotes Wives. Together, with Sarah Finecey, Executive Director of Coyotes Charities, they helped raise over $8,400 for our Melonhead families to help with rent, utilities, car payments, insurance, and Christmas meals. Thank you so much for your tremendous help!
